2026 Legislative Session Update

Washington’s legislative session runs through March 12, with lawmakers focused on passing supplemental budget proposals and advancing key policy bills.

Some of the bills receiving significant attention:

SB 6346 — Millionaire’s Tax

  • 9.9% tax on Washington taxable income over $1 million
  • Exempts households earning under $1 million
  • Revenue intended for education, healthcare, and tax credits like the Working Families Tax Credit
  • Passed the Senate on Feb. 16 — now under consideration in the House
  • Proposed effective date: January 1, 2028

AI Transparency & Deepfakes

  • SB 5984 — Requires chatbots to regularly disclose that users are interacting with AI and adds suicide prevention safeguards
  • SB 5886 — Addresses deepfake technology and AI-manipulated media

Immigration Protection Bills

  • Immigrant Worker Protection Act — Requires employers to notify workers within 72 hours of planned federal immigration enforcement
  • SAFE Act — Requires court orders for federal agents to enter non-public spaces like schools, healthcare facilities, and election offices
